Two days ago, my orchestra needed some background music during intermission at our concert. I was asked the same day it was needed. I have my gig book with a good combination of music and particularly music that is good if its a last minute deal. I’m just curious, what are your “last minute” gig book favorites??
I try keep a little of everything. Beetles, John Lennon, New Age, Jazz, and classical like Debussy and Salzado and Spirituals. I even have Disney music for the kids.
That’s a great idea, to have some music for the kids! While at gigs I’ve been asked several times recently by some elementary school age children to play something age-appropriate for them, but had nothing under my fingers!
One of my gig book favorites is Eleanor Fell’s arrangement of Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto. It carries well and seems to be appreciated by listeners of many ages and backgrounds.
Hey, I think Candace stole my book :^) Sounds pretty much like what I have in mine, right down to the Disney tunes. Only difference is I only have a couple of Spirituals but do have a bunch of folk and Celtic music.
If you want to play something for the kids, learn the theme from Beauty and the Beast. I’m always amazed how many kids recognize it when I’m just playing background music at a gig!
