What is a recommendable lever harp book for the beginner/intermediate student who wants to be challenged?

Mildred Dilling’s 30 Little Classics (I think that’s the title), anything by Barbara Brundage (she may not be able to play all the pieces), anything by Kim Robertson (she has some lovely & interesting arrangements-again, some are more difficult than others).

I’m in the same position as your student. How long has she been playing? I’ve been at harp nearly 3 years, and had piano for 4 years before that. I recently was in desparate need of pretty but not extremely difficult music because I need 2 hours of repertoire in a month, so here’s what I’m working out of. Classics on Request by Barbara Brundage has some very lovely pieces in it, some of which aren’t too hard and all of which sound much more challenging than they really are.

Take a look at the Celtic Christmas book of music by Kim Robertson. I think you’ll agree that these pieces challenge a lever harpist, especially the left hand parts. I believe she has recordings of many of her publications, as well.

I have to agree with Sharon Thormhalen. Her book Rose in Winter is fabulous for an intermediate student. I too have found myself bored to tears with the overly simple melodies in many of the beginner books. Sharon’s book offers great key chnage guides, wonderful fingering illustrations and complex sounding melodies that are easier to play. My problem has mainly been that I get bored by simple straight forward melodies. Its surprising how much “childrens songs” are in the beginner
