I’m looking for a music stand that will sit low so as not to hide the hands.

They usually call them concertino or concertina stands.

I would recommend the Manhasset Voyager line of stands as the base folds up and the stand comes apart in two pieces. Basically you get the same sturdiness and quality of the standard Manhasset stand with portability thrown in. The “lip” of the Concertino Voyager goes down to as low as 16″.

If you want something more elegant and made of wood, you can check out the Anderson music stands. They fold up into one nice little package and the “lip” of the stand goes down to about 20″. I think they also come with life time warranty.

If you’re not looking for something portable, then you probably have more options open for standard models or custom made stands.

I’ve been interested in these stands, as they look like they’d not interfere with the pedals if you’re half-blind like me and have to put the stand close. But I don’t know anyone who has one, and the desk looks a bit small.

Pilgrim harps tend to bring one (or more) to their displays – nice things.

Sorry if I’m late to the party on this, but I recently bought a Wenger Portastand: http://www.wengercorp.com/Stands/Portastand.html

I primarily play Irish music and get the stand really low in order to simply be a reference tool since I’m only chording. It also has the benefit of being easily portable, but pretty sturdy. (It even has a shoulder strap). The stand itself has a cloth cover with straps that hold down your music, and the cloth comes in a few different subtle colors. I don’t mean to sound sales-pitchy, I just love this little stand!

You can see how low I get it to sit on this video of one of our performances: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2W1RbKmAmE&context=C4f78ab0ADvjVQa1PpcFNDAltO4MbJdnMLIa_gs_ss62uIw0FmEos=
