Hello, I am looking for teachers west of Washington D.C. and near Ventura CA. No, I don’t live in either place, but am interested in attending colleges there, which do not offer music majors. I do wish to pursue my harp studies beyond high-school, though, and am looking for ways to get my education in both ways. As a Catholic, I have only a handful of schools to choose from where I can find teachers and classes which are not so directly opposed to my faith, which I would like to grow in during my college years, not lose. If you have any suggestions for teachers I might be able to study with while attending a good liberal arts college like Christendom college in Virginia or St. Thomas Aquinas College in California, I would really appreciate it!

    Sincerely,
    Madeline D.

Have you considered Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana? Here is a link to the Harp Instructor there, Suzann Young-Davids.

    Dear Madeline,

There are lots of amazing teachers here in the D.C. area, and I have heard from many friends who go to Christendom that there are lots of harpists there, too 🙂

My teacher, Elizabeth Blakeslee, is amazing. It would take you a little over an hour of driving up 66 towards DC to get to her, but that’s with no traffic, and 66 east in the morning is CRAZY. So if you’re planning on getting close to DC for lessons, you’ll have to take that into account. I’m not sure who’s closer to Front Royal, but I’m sure there’s someone!

Anyway, good luck! If you end up at Christendom, come up to St. John the Beloved in McLean sometime for the TLM at noon on Sundays; it’s beautiful!

    Madeline,

Rebecca Anstine Smith is also near DC (about 1/2 east in Crofton). She is GREAT and her bio. is on the web. She was former principal harpist at the Kennedy Center and taught at UMD for 25 years. She IS taking new students – check her out as well.

    Kay
