    Hi there fellow harpists
I’m an experienced player looking for a harp that I can take onboard a plane. I’ll mostly be travelling within the uk and
using Aer Lingus. They specify that an item cannot be wider than 40/41 cm but harpsicles are 48.

Has anyone any experience of taking a harpsicle (fullsicle) on board a plane?

Ideally onboard an aer lingus ?

    Many thanks
    Christiane

I have taken a Triplett Zephyr many times on airplanes. I worried a lot at first, as the dimensions didn’t quite match what they were requiring, but I have never had a problem. I did have problems with a Stoney End Eve, however, twice. I was forced to gate check it with the baggage. I was a wreck the whole flight, both times. The Eve is slightly larger than the Triplett. I don’t know how they compare to the harpsicle… I am guessing the harpsicle is larger than the Zephyr, but don’t know for sure. Hope this helps!

Thank you Ellen . What kind of plane were you refused on? And may I ask is that why you changed to the zephyr? My problem with zephyr is it starts at middle c I would miss the bass strings. I looked up dimensions and it seems the harpsicle is similar to eve, eve being 79 41 23 cm and harpsicle 79 48 14. I can’t find the full dens ions of the zephyr online anywhere

I’ve taken a harpsicle on a plane several times, some years ago. The planes were 737s. I was able to put it in the overhead and also in the closet intended for coats for first class passengers. I think airline employees are sometimes inconsistent in applying rules – some attendants didn’t seem to care that I put it in the closet, others were not happy with me. So you take your chances. I never had to check it, thank goodness, but it certainly added stress to the trip until I had the harpsicle stowed and me in my seat!

Well, I don’t know the types of planes. It easily fits in the large planes I take when I go to England and Ireland. I’ve also flown with it on smaller planes across country, and once on a tiny puddle jumper, where it didn’t fit in the overhead, but it did fit under the seat in front of me. Good luck!
