ParticipantHello fellow harpists!
I was wondering if anyone had repertoire ideas for early-late advanced harp and violin duets. I’ve performed: Fantasie/Saint Saens, Melodie/Gluck, Meditation/Massanet, Entract/ Ibert, Duo/Izmaylov, Olga (Ladies in Lavender)/Hess and 2 Romances by Tournier, and I own the Kikta Sonata.

ParticipantI’ve been through a lot of music trying to find harp and viola pieces. In my music drawer I found Berceuse op. 299 by Karl Oberthur. It has a great harp part. There is a beautifully played clip on youtube.

ParticipantGretchen,
Thanks for the title! I found it on youtube; very pretty.August 16, 2014 at 6:26 pm #143474Gretchen Cover
ParticipantAlso meant to suggest: Larghetto and Allegro for Violin and Harp by Gaetanio Donizetti and Sonata for Violin & Harp by Louis Spohr.
I’m not sure if this is still published – but available on IMSLP – is Serenade by L.M Tedeschi. The harp part is not difficult.

ParticipantI made an edition of Dvorak’s Song to the Moon from Rusalka that can be played on violin and harp. If you email me, I can send it to you.

ParticipantI read through a duo by Marie-Martin Marin and I liked it very much. It is composed by a harpist and works well except for one tricky passage. It was at the music library, so not sure where it would be available. Also Rossini Andante con variazioni is nice.

ParticipantHannah–look into the Duo as well as the Larghetto for vln/harp by 19th c. Latvian composer Nicolai von Wilm. Both pieces are extremely well written for both instruments and have a bold, Slavic character. There are several YouTube videos of these works by European harpists. I play the Duo with a cellist and it never fails to bring the house down! Sheet music is available on the BYU Harp Archive.

MemberHannah, In 1993 at the World Harp Congress event in Copenhagen, a harp-and-flute duo performed the Sonata Opus 135 by Erkki Melartin (Finland, 1875-1937) and its beauty was so immediately apparent I ordered it when I returned to the U.S. from International Music Services (now distributed by Vanderbilt Music Inc.) in Indiana. It is wonderful for violin and harp and I have performed it on violin with another harpist (I am professional on both instruments).
Another suggestion is a tango by Carlos Gardel (d. 1925) that was used in several movies such as the Hollywood one “The Scent of a Woman” starring Al Pacino. I arranged it for violin accompanied by harp and Por Una Cabeza can be ordered ($5.) from Vanderbilt Music and other harp music specialist dealers in England, Germany, and Australia.
