Oh, I wasn’t disagreeing with anything you said, Andy B. It’s just that the people arranging these events often aren’t aware that we can’t even get a deduction out of it the way would if we gave them the same amount in cash instead.
I’ve done my fair share of these events over the years for one reason or another – used to make a deal with some of them to give me a check for my full fee for doing the job and then I would turn right around and give them a check for the same amount and mark it “donation” – then take it as a deduction –
Sorry, hit Post too soon. Unless the law has changed very recently, you can deduct physical objects (sheet music, instruments, etc) that you donate, but not your time/performance/volunteering.
The value of volunteer time or services to a charitable organization is not deductible. However, out-of-pocket expenses directly related to voluntary service are usually deductible.
A very beautiful musical Non Profit music organization is happening in November. It is going to be a fun filled day of social consciousness, community and environmental awareness on a musical platform with an urgent humanitarian effort to fight poverty and feed the hungry. I think it is a good way for charity towards the poor. http://baysiderocksfestival.com/about
