Oh, I wasn’t disagreeing with anything you said, Andy B. It’s just that the people arranging these events often aren’t aware that we can’t even get a deduction out of it the way would if we gave them the same amount in cash instead.

The idea that music should be free seems to be like some disease with no cure.

    Hi Andy,

I understand what you’re saying and agree with you.

I’ve done my fair share of these events over the years for one reason or another – used to make a deal with some of them to give me a check for my full fee for doing the job and then I would turn right around and give them a check for the same amount and mark it “donation” – then take it as a deduction –

    Hi Jer,

I was asked once to play for an art expo and as well, they wanted me to do it for free.

A good evasion is to say…Let me check my calendar…gee, I already have a previous committment for that day and time.

I just hope that everyone is keeping a record of your non-profit playing. It is still tax deductable.

The guy that does my taxes wants me to keep a record of distance I travel for a free event and what I would have charged if it had not been a freebi.

    Just FYI.

    Services are not deductible, Paul.

Sorry, hit Post too soon. Unless the law has changed very recently, you can deduct physical objects (sheet music, instruments, etc) that you donate, but not your time/performance/volunteering.

It goes as donation to non-profit charity.

That’s what I’m saying. That kind of donation is not tax deductible, or every volunteer in America who does any volunteer work would use it:

    http://www.bbb.org/us/Charity-Tax-Deductions/

The value of volunteer time or services to a charitable organization is not deductible. However, out-of-pocket expenses directly related to voluntary service are usually deductible.

Here’s a link to the relevant IRS document (pdf, so it’s a direct download link):

You can deduct your mileage, but not your performance

A well known jazz singer in my area gave me a response that all ways seems to work.

A very beautiful musical Non Profit music organization is happening in November. It is going to be a fun filled day of social consciousness, community and environmental awareness on a musical platform with an urgent humanitarian effort to fight poverty and feed the hungry. I think it is a good way for charity towards the poor.
