ParticipantYes, it can be very distracting. So can a neutral background the same color as the strings. An historic chapel where I’ve played many times has a black and white tiled floor which drives me crazy, it’s so distracting! So hard to see the strings! A piece of carpet in a strong solid color can be a good thing to take along with you!

ParticipantWe take a green color bed sheet along wherever we go.

ParticipantAaaaaah that explains it, I took my latest grade at a different centre and played absolutey terribly compared to usual, I was on a pale cream and brown patterned carpet and I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t see my strings, I just blamed it on feeling under the weather…. thank you, I learn so much from you guys

MemberThe first time I played my new harp in public, we were positioned on a RED carpet. All of my C strings disappeared! Fortunately, we practiced in the church three days before performance, so I found out about it early enough to say something. The resident sound tech took a white table cover off a nearby table, draped it over a music stand, and set it behind me. Phew!
Bringing a piece of fabric with you is a fabulous idea! I’ll definitely add that to my list of things to bring when I start playing out. 🙂

ParticipantI can remember at the beginning of playing harp in the 1980s a patterned carpet would drive me absolutely nuts. As time went on, I choose not to let the patterns distract me. Just last week I bought a rug for my music room of an animal print, and I don’t even notice it when I play the harp. So like with all things in life, we can choose to overcome obstacles in a positive way…..

Participantanother confusing thing is to play in coloured spotlight. With the red spot, no more C’s!!! My solution was to paint black dots onto the red strings, like the ladybirds..

Christian,
This is good advice.

ParticipantYes – a real problem at many different jobs – early on, I played a crowded cocktail party and a lady wearing an off white dress with geometric red and black line figures came and stood by the harp – as she talked she swayed a bit and I couldn’t see anything – had to stop until she moved away –

ParticipantI’ve found that using Bow Brand – Concedo gut strings on the second octave helps a lot. The strings that are normally clear are white

ParticipantNo offense to any decorators but that sounds like one ugly carpet.
