    Dear All,

I have a question about how to manage reverberation through the floor to my neighbor below. Has anyone had any experience with this? I am looking at using a thick mat usually placed under large speakers (Auralex), but if anyone has any experience with this, it would be much appreciated. I don’t have a carpet in the room, do you think a thick carpet this might also help?

    Thank you

    Heba

Sure, carpeting and padding will help, but it may not completely stop it. If you can’t then the next best thing is to be sure you only practice during allowable times (check your local noise ordinances) and if the neighbor has any special time issues try to be aware of them and accommodate them (such as if they have a baby who takes it’s nap at 2pm don’t play at 2pm).

You certainly should try to reduce any disturbance as much as you reasonably can, however keep in mind that you do have a right to do things that make some noise during the day.

What’s the floor made of? Cement? Wood? Is it just vibrations coming through the floor that the neighbor is complaining about? Or is it just generally that you are practicing and the sound is coming through everywhere(open windows, through the floor, etc.)?

Try as much as possible to work with the neighbor. When are they not there? Ask them when are the best times of the day or evening for you to practice? Tell them how much time you need to practice each day and then ask when would be the best times to do that? You may have to put sound absorbing material and carpeting on the floor, but also on the walls near the harp to minimize the sound.
