I am in the market for a new harpmobile. Previously I had used a Toyota Sienna with the third row of seats folded down and the bucket seat behind the driver’s seat removed. I was reading topics from 3 years ago where a Subaru Outback seemed well liked. What are people using these days? Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Very much like my Subaru Outback. However my pedal harp is smallish, only 70″ tall. You’d only fit a full concert grand in by folding one of the front seats forward.

My 85CG fits nicely in a 2017 Subaru Outback without having to move the front seats. The Outback has been redesigned in the last few years, so I don’t know about the newer ones. Now I have a Subaru Ascent and there is plenty of extra room.

We travel with a Camac full-size concert grand, the Atlantide Prestige, which is 75″ tall with the transport cover on the harp. Our car is a 2022 Subaru Outback Premium, which has more than enough space for this harp, with almost 5″ in length left over. I am 5′ 6″ and the harp has all this room in the car with my driver’s seat in a comfortable position for me. The top of the harp column goes behind the driver’s seat, on the left side here in the USA. That way, the side of the harp with all the discs is facing UP. The harp fits straight-in, we do not have to place it at an angle, and there is plenty of additional room for the bench, music stand, amplification equipment, etc. Did I say “WE LOVE THIS CAR?” This car is the most comfortable, capable car with its all-wheel-drive and other nice features, that we have ever owned. I hope this helps.

Best wishes to all of you,
    Balfour (and Carol Lynn)

I’m on my 5th Dodge Grand Caravan in a row! I can carry 4 pedal harps at a time in this car(and I frequently have to). This one I think is a 2018, and all the seats fold flat into the floor. It’s the high end version this time, with built in GPS, a CD player, and a hard drive that I can load CD’s on to. I currently have about 325 CD’s on the hard drive! I understand they don’t make the Caravan any more, and I don’t know if the Pacifica is the replacement vehicle. Each of my Caravan’s I drove to about 140,000 miles without any repairs. It’s a great car.

I have always wanted a used Mercedes station wagon, but I hear they can need a lot repairs. But classy! Maybe I would settle for a Volvo.

Thanks JAYDG. That would be a problem. I have a Salvi Diana, and it is around 74″ tall. I’m glad I asked!

BILLOOMS, I didn’t even realize there was a Subaru Ascent! I’ll look into it. Thanks.

BALFOUR-KNIGHT, so did you need to make a special order (for the premium)? That would work nicely, as my harp is 74″ tall, not counting the padding from the cover. Thanks.

CARL-SWANSON, I’ll look into the Pacifica. I plan on bringing my poofy harp cover with when I go to dealerships, to test out the height availability. Thanks.

SAUL DAVIS ZLATKOVSKI: Ooo, Mercedes! That’s traveling in style! A harpist friend had a Volvo years ago and loved it, until her car got totaled (no harp in at the time, thank God!).

    Hi Celeste,

Yes, with the supply-chain problems and delays going on currently, we did have to special-order our 2022 Outback Premium. But it was well worth the wait! My Atlantide Prestige is 74.25″ high without the transport cover, if that helps. To avoid taking the actual harp to a dealership, it is a great idea to take the transport cover! We have also seen the Subaru Ascents and they are really nice cars! There was not as long a waiting time for those, but we wanted an Outback.

Wishing you the best in your new car search,
    Balfour and Carol Lynn

My 85CG (73.5” tall) fits in my 2019 Outback Limited quite easily, with room for the dolly and bench and whatnot. I’m only 5’ so my seat is forward. I do move the passenger seat up after my 6’ husband sits in it – he moves it all the way back.
If you like Subaru, the Ascent is larger. Best wishes finding a new harpmobile.

I have a church concert on pedal harp this coming Sunday, and I always look forward to taking the Outback. The new expanded design for the rear-gate makes for easy concert-harp loading!

    Best wishes,
    Balfour

My parents had a Toyota Siena for many years and many hundreds of thousands of miles. I felt it was too high off the ground to make loading easy, but if you can buy one that was handicapped-equipped, you might be able to use that in loading, it will have a ramp, and even a harness to hold the harp up in the air (don’t do it).
