Young Artist’s Harp Competition announces 2022 repertoire

The Young Artist’s Harp Competition announced the repertoire for its 2022 contest, which will take place June 21–25 on the campus of Washington College in Chesterton, Maryland. The competition is open to harpists of all nationalities, with three age divisions. Preliminary videos are due by May 1. After the preliminary competition round, finalists will be invited to compete in person. Prizes range from $75–$1,000, or winners may opt for a scholarship to the Young Artist’s Harp Seminar, held immediately following the competition.

Emerging Artist Division (age 19 and under)

Category A

Choose one:

  • Prelude and Toccata by G.F. Handel/Grandjany
  • Siciliana by Ottorino Respighi, trans. Grandjany
  • Any sonata by Franz Anton Rosetti, repeats optional, any edition (not to exceed 7 minutes)

Category B

Choose one:

  • Sarabanda e Toccata by Nino Rota
  • Impromptu-Caprice by Gabriel Pierné
  • Images by Marcel Tournier: Choose any, from any Suites, total time between 5–7 minutes

Category C

Free choice contemporary piece (composed after 1980), not to exceed 12 minutes

New Artist Division (age 14 and under)

Category A

Choose one:

  • Aria and Rigaudon by G. Kirchhoff/Grandjany
  • Theme and Variations in C Major by Haydn/Salzedo
  • “Largo” from Violin Sonata No. 5, BMV 1018, by J.S. Bach, any edition

Category B

Choose one:

  • “Quietude” and “Iridescence” from Five préludes for harp by Carlos Salzedo
  • Sonatina for Harp by Sergiu Natra
  • Nocturne in E-flat Major by Mikhail Glinka

Category C

Free choice contemporary piece (composed after 1980), not to exceed 10 minutes

Preparatory Division (age 11 and under)

Category A

Choose one:

  • “Sarabande” from Suite No. 4 in D minor by G.F. Handel (any edition)
  • Sonatina No. 2 in F Major, “Andante grazioso” and “Allegro,” by Sophia Dussek

Category B

Choose one:

  • Deux chansons populaires françaises: “Le bon petit roi d’Yvetôt” and “Et ron ron ron, petit patapon” by Marcel Grandjany
  • Chanson dans la nuit (Song in the Night) by Carlos Salzedo

Category C

3 to 5 minutes of any work(s) by Bernard Andrès
