The sixth edition of the International Harp Competition in Szeged, Hungary, will take place Nov. 29–Dec. 4, 2022, at the Reök Palace in Szeged. This year’s competition celebrates the 140th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s birth (1882) and the 110th anniversary of Alphonse Hasselmans’ death (1912). Founded by Natalia Gorbunova in 2007, the triennial competition is now led by Artistic Director Anastasia Razvalyaeva. Razvalyaeva notes, “Our competition aims to discover new talent, help all participants to discover new horizons, and stimulate the development of harp culture in Hungary.”
The competition is open to harpists of all nationalities, in three categories by age as of Dec. 5, 2022. Required repertoire is listed below. Applications are due Sept. 26. For more information, visit the competition website.
U25 (25 and under)
Stage 1
- Free program of 10 minutes, including any piece by A. Hasselmans
Stage 2
- Free program of 25 minutes, including a piece written for harp after 2001
Stage 3
- Danses sacrée et profane by Claude Debussy
- Free choice virtuoso encore, maximum duration of 6 minutes
U19 (19 and under)
Stage 1
- Free program of 10 minutes, including “Intermezzo” from Háry János by Zoltán Kodály (piano version or arrangement for harp by Aristid von Würtzler)
Stage 2
- Free program of 12 minutes, including any piece by A. Hasselmans
U14 (14 and under)
- Free program of seven minutes, to include one movement from Gyermektáncok (Children’s Dances) by Zoltán Kodály (original piano version or arrangement for harp by Aristid von Würtzler)
