Q and A with Madison Calley

August 24, 2022

With her debut album Ethereal, harpist Madison Calley brings together R&B and the classical pedal harp. We asked Calley to reflect on what she has learned since releasing the album via Platoon in December 2021.

As you reflect on life after the album, what are some of your takeaways from the experience?

I learned that the best art is created from a place of authenticity and soul purpose. When something is created from an authentic place of purpose, anxiety melts and the focus shifts away from the fear of how it will be received or how “viral” it’ll be.

What kinds of music do you most enjoy playing? How has creating the album reinforced or changed your artistic voice?

I most enjoy playing R&B on my harp. Ethereal consists of eight R&B covers, all of which are love songs. Creating the album allowed me to explore different sounds I can create with my harp using plug-ins and unconventional methods of playing.

You have said that part of your goal with the album was to increase inclusivity within classical music. Could you share some of your experiences as a musician of color playing a classical instrument? Has the classical music environment changed since you first began playing the harp?

I’ve had a difficult time making friends or fitting in with the classical community because I was always the only minority student present and never quite fit in with the conservative classical standard. I feel that social media has helped diversify and liberate the classical world in a great way.

What kind of feedback have you had from other musicians or friends about your album?

So far I have received great feedback from everyone about my album. I have expecting fans who tell me they play my music for their unborn babies. I have many fans who tell me they play my music to fall asleep or to just soothe their anxiety. It makes my heart feel so full of joy knowing that I’m able to bring peace to so many people.

What was the first thing that you did after spending so much time and energy releasing your debut album?

As soon as my album was out, I went back home to the East Coast to spend time with my loving family.

Do you have any projects in progress now?

I just finished recording my first children’s lullaby album, which will be released this fall!

Ethereal is now streaming on Apple Music and other platforms. To learn more, follow Calley on Instagram.
