The Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg (France) has appointed Mélanie Laurent as the new solo harp, as well as teacher at the Conservatoire in Strasbourg. She follows former solo harpist and teacher Pierre-Michel Vigneau in this role. The dual position of orchestral musician and conservatory teacher is unique to Strasbourg among cities in France. The audition took place Nov. 7 in four rounds, finishing with a pedagogical test for the teaching aspect of the position.
Laurent says she couldn’t be happier to have this unique opportunity. “I am extremely thrilled to join this incredible national orchestra, which performs symphonic repertoire as well as opera and ballet. I will also have the pleasure of teaching at Strasbourg’s Conservatoire, a renowned institution offering graduate studies.”
Laurent adds that she looks forward to the international culture of the city. Situated just on the French side of the Rhine river, Strasbourg shares the heritage of both French and German cultures. “After ten years living in Paris, I am really excited to start a new chapter in my life in the beautiful city of Strasbourg,” Laurent says.
