The Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) in Norfolk, Va., has appointed Alexis Colner as its new principal harpist, beginning this fall. Auditions were held in February for this tenure-track position.
Colner says she is looking forward to working with the VSO’s music director, Eric Jacobsen. “His energy and ideas are so inspiring, and he’s lined up some amazing projects for this coming season,” she says. “I really can’t wait to get started!”
The new principal harpist says she is also excited to work with the musicians of the VSO. “Everyone has been so kind and helpful in addition to being incredibly talented musicians,” Colner says.
Colner has been invited to appear as guest principal harpist with major orchestras including the Minnesota Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and Omaha Symphony. She studied with Seattle Symphony principal harpist Valerie Muzzolini before earning her Master’s in Harp Performance at the Juilliard School as a student of Nancy Allen. Colner also serves on faculty at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, Va.
