The degree programme includes 1:1 lessons, weekly harp class, chamber music, orchestral and opera excerpts, jazz and improvisation, contemporary and experimental performance as well as specialist workshops and modules on early music, the Welsh Triple harp, and technique. As Head of Harp, I specialise in technique and solo/chamber repertoire, but there’s a team of tutors who teach other classes, including Amanda Whiting and Caryl Thomas. We have frequent visiting tutors and guest artists with a large number of recitals and masterclasses programmed at the college’s wonderful concert hall. The harp is the national instrument of Wales and our students are therefore in much demand for events, especially at the Government buildings and for Royal visits. The college building is a stunning piece of architecture within the heart of the capital of Wales, bordering a large park and Cardiff Castle. It’s the first UK conservatoire to achieve a gold standard by the Music Quality Enhancement review, citing RWCMD as a shining example of best practice across European conservatoires. It’s a course that trains harpists to thrive and succeed in the current music industry.
