Harpist Cindy Horstman has created a video for World Otter Day using music she composed to represent the playfulness of otters.

According to a press release, after hearing a performance by Duo Da Capo of her piece Life Aquatic for flute and harp, Cindy Horstman heard the performers mention that May 29 was World Otter Day. Horstman says this piqued her “creative curiosity.” Life Aquatic is a suite of four movements, one of which is called “Sea Otters” and “depicts the playful nature of these wonderful animals,” according to the composer.

After doing some research, Horstman found out about the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF) and reached out to the IOSF to discuss her idea of a promotional video using “Sea Otters.” According to its website, the IOSF is “dedicated to the conservation of the world’s 13 species of otter.” Horstman says the organization took an interest in the idea partly because the founder’s daughter happens to play the clarsach, a type of Gaelic harp.

Horstman says she hopes the video she created for World Otter Day will raise awareness for the IOSF. “I was thrilled to be able to help this organization with my music and it was so much fun creating the video of otters at play!”
