about the author

Gretchen Sheetz Kirby

Author Gretchen Sheetz Kirby experienced some of the physical symptoms discussed in this article from playing the harp after increased practice hours, especially during her high school, collegiate, and graduate school years. Fortunately for her, her mom (Dr. Cathy Sheetz) is a professional PT and taught her practical exercises to use every day. Her work with her mother and other PTs helped her address tension with tangible techniques. Some of her favorites include gentle strengthening with a resistance band and rolling a lacrosse ball between her upper back and a wall to slowly work out pernicious knots. As a result of cross training, Kirby finds her practice sessions to be more grounded, her playing more free, and her body prepared to tackle the heftiest musical challenges. She feels the most focused and engaged with her harp when she manages to exercise a few times a week, stretch diligently, eat well, and sleep soundly. Though challenging to enact, she believes the concept of prioritizing her body’s health in order to fully embrace her instrument is one we should all take more seriously.
