    Hey all,

I’m going to be accompanying a fiddler for a Santa Lucia service at our church in a couple of weeks.

Hi – have a look at a beginners finger-style guitar book – they always have accomp patterns in different meters – (you might also find some examples online)

I actually know some basic guitar fingering patterns, but have been unable to adapt them to harp in a way that sounds pleasing…they always sound like I’m trying to play guitar!

Go run out (run, don’t walk) and get yourself a copy of Verlene Shermer’s “The Sing Along Harper”.

Although the book is written to help harpist accompany themselves or others singing, it works equally well for learning to accompany other musicians.

But the best thing about is that the second part of the book is a library of finger picking patters for accompaniments specifically for harp

I have it, but to be honest, I can’t figure the patterns out at all.

You can outline the chord in your left hand on the quarter notes–1, 5, 8, 5.

Where can you buy this book? I would like to get it as it sounds very useful. Is it on-line somewhere?

If I remember correctly, I got it from Sylvia Woods: http://www.harpcenter.com

You might obtain the LaRiviere book of exercises. In it there are exercises using just about every combination of finger patterns possible. If you learn those patterns, then you can use them in playing music. We do NOT play the same patterns as guitarists, we are harpists. Guitar playing does not sound that good on a harp.

Audrey, Louise Trotter , at http://www.louisetrotter.com, has given workshops internationally and helped many people learn useful bass patterns. Of her many publications, at least four have pages of examples showing the type of patterns you asked about. In First Steps to Harp Improvisation, including recording, see pages 2 and 3. In Easy Fake Book for Lever Harp (pub. by Lyon and Healy) see page 4. In Getting Started in Pop Harp, page 11 and others throughout. In The Creative Folk Harpist, Arranging and Performing, page 14 and many more throughout the book. Browse and pick one or several, and if Louise offers a workshop near you, try to attend; you’ll come away a better player, I promise!
