Another correction: After paying more attention I realized that the lowest bass strings have a different anchor than the higher ones. So it turns out these Vanderbilt bass strings do appear to be the same design at least as the premiere bass strings. sorry for the misinformation.
For clarity’s sake: the bass and nylons from vanderbilts came in and the bass strings do not appear to be similar to the bass strings on my camac which I am told were made by premiere, so I am guess at least the bass strings are not made by the same company. Sorry I think the way I worded it before was vague
yeah I remembering hearing something similar or perhaps that they were even made by camac as well.. but that may just be the gut strings. I have the bass and nylons now and the ends of the bass strings with the anchors are clearly constructed differently than the bass strings on my camac which I was told are premier so it will be interesting for sure!
Thanks for the advice! Given the times, it has been a bit challenging to even procure bass and nylons at all so I am getting those from the Vanderbilt company and then I will use the backup premiere set for my camac. Let’s hope it is a good combination!
thanks for the recommendation!I have premiere on my big blue so I am used to and like the premiere, but since I’ve never dealt with salvi I wasn’t sure if a slightly thicker gauged set was more appropriate.
Thanks Charles, I’ll look into that. On the Vanderbilt website they mention that their strings are made by camac but are not as thin as those made by camac for a different company. Are they speaking of Premier strings then?
I think the owner just had a harp tech restring it. I got the impression the harp hadn’t been played in a while. I own the harp now and am just looking to buy a backup set but the owner couldn’t tell me. It’s a Camac which I think makes things a bit more confusing since Camac seems to make 3 different brands of strings (Vanderbilt, Camac Classique, and Premier) and the Camac branded one seems much more expensive so I am struggling to pick the most appropriate strings to use as backups.
Mikaela Davis uses a barcus barry pickup with some pedals. There’s also a lever Harp/Singer named Emilie Kahn does as well in some videos on YouTube. My experience with the soundboard pickups is that will feedback into a PA much faster than the Big Blue/Rainbow pickup systems so you have to be more judicious with which effects you use and how much you apply them. Loopers, Reverbs, Echo effects should be fine. Chorus, Flanger etc will probably work well. When you get into overdrives, distorions, and Fuzz pedals I think you will have problems. Make friends with some guitar players and ask to try out their pedals!
I did not have the pleasure to hear/play one of Kortier’s pickup system, but as they are piezo pickups that are picking up individual strings, I believe they would essentially sound like the similar offerings from Camac, L&H, and Salvi. That system has many benefits, but sounding “just like an acoustic Harp” is not one of them.
I use a Yamaha ThR to test the dusty strings pickup and it certainly works. Since it is essentially the same technology as the big twin, I think it would work for you. Another option is to buy just the crystal pickup from barcus barry. It has a much hotter output. If you are interested I can check to make sure it works with the Yamaha without the preamp, but I am pretty sure it does as it works everywhere else I’ve tried without the preamps.
