ParticipantHi Biagio,
I hadn’t thought to try harps outside my budget. I was trying to narrow down my search because I am only going for one day, and I worry about running out of time. It might be worth it, though, to get a feel for a greater variety of harps. This would fit in with my desire to learn more first hand before I make a commitment.
I am both nervous and incredibly excited about my trip! Thank you for all your advice.
Best,
Melinda

ParticipantHi Biagio,
This is really interesting. How would I know, with so little experience, what I might like to change? My old harp has all nylon strings, so that is all I know so far.
I would like to know also, if you have the time, what differences you have found between the various harps I mentioned. This is the first time I will actually be touching other harps, much less seeing and hearing them in person! And I am trying to be as informed a buyer as possible. I hope to buy the best I can afford, so it will last me many years.
Thanks so much for your very informed replies,
Melinda

ParticipantThanks for your reply, Biagio.
Can you explain what a string band is, and how I might want to customize it?
I will look for Magical Strings while I’m there, but they are not listed as one of the vendors, so I might be out of luck. I was interested in one or two models from Blevins also, but they will not be there either. She was very nice when I emailed her, though.
Best,
Melinda

ParticipantThanks, Andy. I will keep that in mind.

ParticipantWow, thanks for all the replies! I have definitely reconsidered this purchase. It seemed a little fishy to me that the seller could give me no specific information. And if the instrument is new, how did it get so damaged already? I have just been waiting so long to play, especially after finally getting a “taste” of the experience. And since it was a local seller, it meant that I could try out the instrument in person.
It does appear to be the Mikel Saffron 34 (Hunky Bunky). I went to their website, which, strangely, contained no pricing information. I am glad, hearpe, that you are enjoying yours. But I still really want to test drive any prospective instrument before buying it. I was very tempted, in fact, by two of the Blevins models, but they will not be at the Festival, so I can’t try them out.
Biaggio and Janis, I am almost certainly now going to wait until the summer when I can see all the different harp brands together in one place. I want to get the best sounding/feeling instrument I can for my price range. While I would not want to get something I disliked the look of, looks are absolutely not my first priority.
Iris, I like the idea of the lighter string tension of the Luchair (I have had joint issues in the past). Sligo is supposed to be at Somerset, so I am going to check it them out there. They are kind of out of my price range, though.
wil-weten, I am certainly interested in the Dustys, and the Camacs as well. My favorite sounding harp so far is the Dusty Strings FH34 in bubinga. But that is not possible for me right now.
A girl can dream, though, can’t she….?
