I’m sure the same is true for silhouette. Its quite easy just to plug into a computer and record with the DHC. I do it often, but, have never one it without someone operating the computer.

I think rock and pop are great on both harps! But, my DHC makes it all a bit easier. This recording is not going to be on youtube. My husband and I are just recording a background song for a photo slide show. The Satie I put up in my last blog was played on the DHC. I’ve used it on a few albums here, but, not sure they are on youtube. Small country ๐Ÿ™‚ hehe.

    Hey Christine!
My stand, well, its a percussion stand on the bottom with an attachment I had custom made by a local metal worker. I basically took the harp to them, said what I needed, showed a rough drawing, and it works beautifully (will be better once I get permanently attached foam on the inside, now it just has pieces of foam I put in to place when using it.) It might be cheaper for me to find the cover somewhere in Europe. I can have it sent to Denmark and pick it up at Christmas.
As for the differences, the tension is a huge one. Pulling harder doesn’t give you more sound, just a worse sound. But, its really lovely to play! I’m recording on mine in a few minutes. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hehe…I could sew a wonky harp cover, I’m sure. I don’t think it’d fit anything though ๐Ÿ˜€

I will check out 4 Seasons before going to a sailmaker. We do have 26% VAT, but, I still think it might be cheaper than buying the Camac case and paying 26% VAT. Thanks so much for all the great ideas!!

Great ideas, thanks! Unfortunately, Iceland doesn’t really have a store like this. :-p The only place I’ve found here is a company that makes tents, and they weren’t really in to the idea. There are lots of fashion designers here, but, not so much designing for furniture with heavy weight upholstery fabrics. Most fabric for this kind of stuff is just ordered off the internet, so, its been difficult to find someone with the capabilities of doing this ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey!! I tend to agree with you on the electroacoustic route. I’ve yet to hear one that sounds truly great acoustically. However, I don’t have amplification in my acoustic harps. I ended up buying a DHC Blue light and that has been perfect for me. My pedal harps are often amplified for big pop shows with condenser mics and regular mics, but, I can’t say I’ve actually ever heard what it sounds like!
As for comparing 23’s to 85’s, etc, the best advice I can give you is go to a harp center. Whether its Lyon and Healy in Chicago, or Virginia Harp Center, somewhere, you can try out the harps next to each other. I actually have both an 85 and a 23 and, honestly, I can’t compare them. They both have their strengths. Salvi has a very special sound, which is quite different from Lyon and Healy. The one plus in going to a harp center is that they often have different brands which you can sit next to each other and play. So, if you can go somewhere to play possible harps to purchase, do it. It will be worth it!

Some teachers might be willing to give lessons via Skype, also. It could be a way to check in once a month or more to make sure you’re not developing any bad habits. ๐Ÿ™‚ Not sure of any specific teachers that do this, but ask around? ๐Ÿ™‚

Of all the things that you mention, I would say safe storage seems to be your most difficult problem to solve. Have you thought about renting a harp local to the festival? Then you don’t need to worry about storing it as whoever rents it to you would arrange for transport (at your expense.) As for grass/mud/etc. I would speak to organizers about this and what can be done to help you. Then you can have a plan for the harp you are renting to present to people that are wary of renting to an outside gig. As for this coming out of your pocket, it is quite often one of the difficulties of travelling with a harp. Its a bummer. You can always ask your bandmates to chip in. Just some ideas…

Hi Li Shan! First of all, so cool to get a new harp!! As for deciding which finish to go for, besides what you like best, there is one small thing to consider. I have three harps, one natural, one mahogany, and one walnut. The two darker harps show scratches very easily! The natural one, not so much. So, if the harp is going to be moved a lot, you might want to consider a lighter finish. However even with that being said, its relatively easy to touch up small scratches on the darker harps with a furniture pen. Don’t know if that helps you to decide ๐Ÿ™‚

I would say there is a bit of an honor code. I’ve been in a performing duo for 6 years now, and while our name is unique, I can’t imagine someone taking it. One solution, without going through the process of trademarking it, is to establish a website right away. Even just purchasing the domain name (which is cheap) will help others from accidentally choosing the same name. I think in general, we as musicians want to have unique names so we’d rather not take one from someone else ๐Ÿ™‚ (Not saying it can’t happen though…)
