I am an adult student who started playing 3 years ago all manicured. The more I have worked at it, and the more challenging and beautiful the pieces, the shorter my nails have gotten. I want to develop good sound and good technique and can hear the difference. Maybe it will solve itself.

Could be dementia in which case it really isn’t in her control. Otherwise, there are people who derive enjoyment from being miserable in which case you made her day. Therefore your performance was a success for the entire audience, even her.
