    Another thing that works is to write in just a few notes at the beginning. For instance, only ledger line notes. It makes it less frustrating, and by the end if the piece they have learned that note. Harpsickle uses this approach.
    The goal is to make things as painless as possible. Beginners over 50 are much more likely to quit if the reading is too hard. On the other hand, finally learning to read music is quite exciting to them!
