MemberI so appreciate all the responses from all! Very interesting indeed. Speaking of Pemberley….I posted the same question to the folks at Republic of Pemberley http://www.pemberley.com/bin/regency/regency.cgi?read=49017 and got some very helpful responses as well.
Including a book “Patrick Piggot The Innocent Diversion. Music in the life and Writings of Jane Austen” which discusses, as you mentioned, Jane’s modeling of Mary Crawford on Jane’s cousin Eliza…as well as Eliza’s possible acquisition of a book of harp music entitled “Feuilles de Terpsichore, ou journal: compose d’Overtures, d’Airs arranges et d’Airs avec accompagnement. Pour la Harpe'”.
Of course, much is conjecture but interesting to think about nonetheless…

MemberI *did* find out in discussing the most recent Mansfield Park with our friends in the UK that Masterpiece Classic cut out the scene of Mary Crawford playing the harp when they aired it in the US!! (unless I completely missed it–which would be shocking as I didn’t move from my seat). So disappointing!!! Perhaps it will be included in the DVD version, one can only hope.

MemberIt was actually “Mansfield Park”…a character named Mary Crawford is quite the accomplished harpist. I haven’t seen the screen versions of Mansfield Park…but perhaps there would be some information there! (if the directors did their research)
Also, in “Persuasion”, the Musgrove girls play the harp. I can’t remember the harp in “Pride & Prejudice” at the moment, but I am sure if I went back to it, it would all come back to me ….

MemberThank you for all the suggestions! We do have a harp shop in the area…though they have mainly pedal harps, from what I understand. My teacher also has a number of folk harps. I will try and look into the Serenade!
Thank you!

MemberThank you all for the great suggestions! I will definitely look into some solid theory training and it sounds like 34 strings (or more) might be more appropriate. I really look forward to owning and playing a harp!

MemberThanks for the replies!
That’s a good question! My harp teacher teaches a range of of musical styles, with special interests in Celtic and medieval/renaissance but I am not sure if she is familiar with period technique or working with a replica instrument but I will ask! (I think she noted her technique for early music is classically based). I certainly am willing to look into it…but since it is all so new to me, am still navigating all the possiblities! Your suggestions are much appreciated.
