    hurray- with all your help and some further research online it has all become much clearer – i have brain ache but i understand a little more about octaves and ranges etc – cheers guys – much appreciated!!!

    thanks for your replies, yes am in the uk, max budget £500-600 tops. no musical experience apart from school lessons in guitar
