ParticipantHi Dale,
The Burton arrangement I have is entitled “Larghetto” and yes, it is the Laschia ch’io pianga aria from “Rinaldo.” It’s in the key of C (or Cb on the pedal harp) and is two pages. Rhett’s arrangement is also two pages and is in the key of D (or Db on pedal). Both are playable on either lever or pedal harp.
The form of the Burton arrangement is ABACA (almost like the song by Genesis!).
Rhett’s is ABAA(an octave higher)CABAA(8va).
This probably doesn’t make much sense; sorry. Each arrangement has all three themes/sections; you can repeat any section or take things up an octave however you prefer.
If you’d like, email me at harp@mindspring.com. I could give you my number and I’d be happy to play both versions over the phone for you.

ParticipantYes, I was thinking of David as well when I posted last night!
‘Say Say Say’ Dave,
Take a look at the ‘Man in the Mirror’ and consider doing some arrangements, or is this request ‘Off the Wall’? It would be ‘Bad’ if you turn us all down. If you do, then just ‘Beat It.’
Hoping you’ll say, “I’ll Be There,”

ParticipantJason Mraz has been covering “Billie Jean” for a while; it would sound funky and cool on the harp. I also like “Human Nature” but associate it more with Miles Davis’ version as well. I’d buy arrangements of those two as well as “You Are Not Alone.” I agree about “Ben” – played that on the organ when I was seven or so, then saw the movie “Willard” (the prequel) and was creeped out!

ParticipantI think so. She was playing a Venus Paragon.

ParticipantI happened to play the Daugherty Niagara Falls again last night. If anyone gets to opportunity to do this piece, don’t pass it up. The part is simple to play (other than some tricky counting & tempo changes) and you get to do these fantastic glisses – some whole-tone – throughout with picks; the louder, the better. The opening solo is several ascending apreggios with descending glisses. The entire piece is purposely cheesy, Gothic, bombastic, and like nothing you’ve ever heard!!

ParticipantIt sounds over the top, but I had pipe organ, string quartet and a choir of 35. My mom is an organist and choir director and the choir members are all friends; it ended up being incredible.
The prelude included the Gounod Sanctus and Lloyd Webber Pie Jesu
Mothers – Schubert – Ave Maria
Processional – Mouret – Rondeau
Opening Hymn – Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Preparation of Gifts – Hopson – The Gift of Love
Communion – Tchaikovsky – Andante cantabile and Mozart – Ave Verum Corpus
Recessional – Vivaldi – Gloria
Postlude – Mozart – Rondo from Eine Kleine
At the reception we had, of all things, a polka band at my Hungarian dad’s insistence. The reception lasted seven hours until they kicked us all out of the place! My husband and I danced to Our Love is Here to Stay by the Gershwins and my dad and I danced to Mr. Wonderful.
When my sister was married a couple years ago, she asked my mom and I to choose everything. She had the same organist with two singers and I was ‘coerced’ into being matron of honor/harpist.
The Mozart Laudate Dominum and Rhett Barnwell’s Ave Maria were in the prelude
Mothers – Lloyd Webber – Pie Jesu
Processional – Campra – Rigaudon
Harp solo – Sakura, Sakura (my brother-in-law is Japanese)
Vocal solo – Beethoven – Ich liebe dich
Recessional – Marcello – Psalm XIX
She had a dj for the reception and danced to Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers with her husband and then Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller with our dad. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

ParticipantI think there is a Niagara Falls Suite by Grofe – don’t even know if there’s a harp part or not – but that Vince is referring to Niagara Falls by Michael Daugherty. I played it a year or so ago and remember having a blast playing a ripping solo.

ParticipantI catch myself rocking but try not to pivot too much by sliding the harp more along my shoulder; guess I’m just hugging my ‘baby’ too hard! I think harpists don’t realize how much the very top of the column is moving. On the other hand, have you ever worked with Yo-Yo Ma and seen him play? The cello is like an extension of his body.
I played 2nd harp for eight or so seasons with the Dayton Philharmonic. The conductor programmed tons of repertoire that had two harps or I would double the louder sections on pieces with one harp part. The principal harpist (my wonderful teacher, Joan Seymour) and I would precisely coordinate when we pulled the harps back and when we set them down. It was like synchronized swimming!
