Bach have had an immense influence in my early life as my father performed them all in two concerts at London’s famous Wigmore Hall. The Chaconne (Ciaccona) from Partita No 2 in D minor is one of the world’s greatest musical masterpieces. It has been arranged and transcribed for many instruments over the years in a wide variety of styles.

This version seeks to reflect the original urtext violin score without overemphasising the harmony, which is generally implied. However as the harp is a very harmonic instrument, a fine balance must be created.

The tempi, character, phrasing, dynamics and articulation are left to the individual musician to make his or her individual journey through this piece.

A few dynamics etc have been added in brackets as editor’s suggestions. The trills marked are optional and always start on the upper note. Wherever possible, the muffling (damping) of the bass line is desired to maintain clarity and reduce the overhanging natural resonance of the harp. Some fingerings are indicated, but only as a guide.

Skaila Kanga has transcribed the “Chaconne” from J.S.
