If you own the modern compiled edition by Jeremy Barlow, it\u2019s number 163, \u201cThe Waits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The delightfully Christmassy lyrics we know today were written by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848\u20131934) and first published in 1924. The refrain, \u201cPast three o\u2019clock, and a cold frosty morning,\u201d is based on the traditional call of the London night watchmen.
