The meaning of its poetic title has been debated for centuries, with theories ranging from references to theatrical subjects to the intricate &#8220;barriers&#8221; created by the work&#8217;s interwoven musical lines. Built upon a flowing tapestry of broken chords and graceful ornamentation characteristic of the French style bris\u00e9, the piece possesses an almost hypnotic serenity.
