It refers to moments when memories become obscured and the lines between reality and imagination begin to blur. In this unsettling space, when your past becomes unclear, you begin to question your own identity. This piece ends with quotes of the “dies irae” as the fear of one’s dissolving lucidity intertwines with the reminder of our own mortality.

While this piece remains in a playable key for both pedal and lever harps alike, the range of the first harp part is larger than most lever harps (though it is adaptable) while the second harp part remains within a playable range for both instruments. This piece includes some challenging rhythms, octave leaps, and harmonics. It also provides great opportunity to express phrasing and increase facility with overlapping hands. The piece is rich and reflective, and gives the sense of perpetual motion.

https://harpcolumn.com/music/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/07/Dissolving-Lucidity.mp3

Jennifer Betzer’s Dissolving Lucidity is for two lever or pedal harps.
