My strong background in improvised music inspired me to create a composition that is not stuck to a single form of notation but instead forms a mosaic of different ways of representation. Within this work, you’ll find traditionally notated passages alongside graphic elements and text-based instructions. This diversity of notation forms the conceptual foundation of the piece, a deliberate invitation to interpretive freedom and individual expression by the performer. The title “Impromptu” was not chosen by chance. The musical genre of the impromptu is traditionally associated with spontaneity, immediacy, and the unprepared. And it was precisely this character that I wanted to capture. “Impromptu” is meant to be a piece that can and should be played without extensive preparation. It should encourage the performer to approach the material intuitively, openly, and playfully. The piece took shape during a spring walk in 2025, a time of personal turbulence and reflection. Surrounded by the awakening nature, I found myself thinking deeply about the challenges, doubts, and goals I was facing. This inner contemplation owed directly into the musical language of “Impromptu”. As such, the piece is not only a musical experiment but also a very personal work, combining spontaneity with introspection.

Maximilian Robin Treller’s Impromptu is for solo pedal harp.
