Lawson described it as &#8220;a Highland rowing measure&#8221; and Jacobite song. The lyrics describe Bonnie Prince Charlie&#8217;s escape from the Jacobite Uprising in 1745\u20136 after the Battle of Culloden on April 16, 1746. Flora McDonald helped Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart) flee to the Isle of Skye in a boat and he is said to have disguised himself as her Irish maid Betty Burke to elude capture. Prince Charles eventually reached France and remained in Europe for the rest of his life. It is very important to bring out the repetitive rhythmic structure of the piece to emulate the rowing of the Skye boat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frances M.
