The melody is loosely based on an old French melody &#8216;Une jeune Pucelle&#8217; (A young Maid).<\/p>\n<p>His original lyrics were in the native language of the indigenous Wyandot (Huron) people, and begin with an exhortation to &#8216;Have courage, you who are humans.
