Cardon was also well-known as a pedagogue, and his primer contains two intermediate solo sonatas of astonishing educational value.

Sonata I emphasizes relaxation of the forearm with octave passages and oscillation in the right hand, particularly in the Minuet and Trio. The left hand features Alberti bass (oscillation), flat-handed bass and moving open octaves. Phrases of material are repeated at varying dynamics, giving the student confidence and security with less material to master. There is modest pedaling, but excellent pedal timing is required. The Minuet and Trio form is clearly indicated, and I have added an optional Coda for a bolder, more satisfying finale. The Allegro first movement could also be performed alone.

Harpists playing from a printed version will want to add blank pages between 8-9 to facilitate page turns.

https://harpcolumn.com/music/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/07/Sonata-I_-Allegro.mp3

Alison Attar has arranged Jean-Baptiste Cardon’s Sonata I for solo pedal harp. A composer and pedagogue, this sonata is featured in Cardon’s 1784 primer “L’art de jouer de la harpe.” Although originally written for the single-action pedal harp, “this sonata transfers beautifully to the modern harp and is a pleasure to play,” says Attar.
