There are two different versions of the same title, one instrumental and one vocal. This arrangement attempts to combine both of them at the same time. This tune became famous in the West mainly due to the fact that Puccini cited the melody in his opera Turandot, an opera about a Chinese princess in 1924. In the 18th Century, the British also publicized the tune after they heard it at the court of Emperor Qiang Long from the Qing Dynasty. Nowadays, it is a well-known folk song which is often performed to represent China on international stage. It is almost second to national anthem in terms of importance and popularity. For instance, It was used on handover ceremonies of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as in the 2008 Beijing Olympic victory ceremony.

Lyrics and translation

好一朵美麗的茉莉花,
好一朵美麗的茉莉花,
芬芳美麗滿枝椏, 又香又白人人誇.

讓我來將你摘下,
送給別人家,
茉莉花呀茉莉花

What a beautiful Jasmine flower,
What a beautiful Jasmine flower,
Sweet-smelling, beautiful, blooming here and there.

Fragrant and pure, everyone praises.
Let me pick you with tender care, Sweetness for all to share.
Jasmine fair, oh Jasmine fair.

Video

Teresa Suen-Campbell (The piece starts at 18:00 of the video)

“Jasmine,” also known as “Mo Li Hua”, is a popular Chinese folk song originally from the JiangSu region of China.
