Setting a poem to music must be like another way of translating the poem. This is the idea that stayed with Carol Wood throughout her work on this collection, based on Stanton Hager\u2019s beautiful translation of Li Bai\u2019s poem.<\/p>\n

Two of the poems, \u201cProud Songsters\u201d and \u201cWhen at Last I Join\u201d are stunning original works in English. The Sappho poems are not true translations of the works of that brilliant and enigmatic Greek poet, but rather three poems by Bliss Carman written in the style and spirit of Sappho.<\/p>\n

\u201cHunters in the House\u201d is best known by the title \u201cPangur Ban.\u201d Wood\u2019s husband, the poet John Wood, made this translation so the poem could be set to music in a traditional Irish idiom.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
