Teaching students virtually, especially beginner level students, can be tricky for a number of reasons. Because of this, I decided to make a list of solos for advanced beginner and intermediate level students that are short, will encourage students to practice during quarantine because they\u2019re fun, and most importantly, are fairly easy to teach from a distance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1773878929\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-941314861\" class=\"col medium-8 small-12 large-8\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/pedal-sliders\/jazz-lullaby\/\">Jazz Lullaby<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Amanda Whiting\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This little melody is sweet and will keep students engaged with its jazzy harmonies. Its sparse melody, easy rhythms, and whole-note chords the whole way through in left hand makes it a great teach-from-home piece.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/kathryn-cater\/soaring-strings\/\">Soaring Strings<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Kathryn Cater\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This collection has nine fun, short solos that are all bird-themed! It\u2019s really great if you are needing to get your students motivated to practice. \u201cBlack Bird Boogie,\u201d \u201cFlying South,\u201d \u201cLittle Red Hen\u201d (a fun piece using enharmonics), and \u201cSeagull\u201d are my personal favorites.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/frances-miller\/the-merry-brook\/\">The Merry Brook<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Frances Miller<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like the name of this piece suggests, this piece is very merry! The happy melody is great for students working on crossing over and triplet figures. Since the triplet figures are pretty consistent throughout, once they learn the pattern, it is smooth sailing from there.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/liana-alpino\/happy-birthday\/\">Happy Birthday<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>arr. Liana Alpino<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During quarantine, my student wanted to be able to play \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d for her grandpa\u2019s 80th birthday over Facetime. This inspired me to put my arrangements (advanced beginner and intermediate) on Harp Column Music so that harpists everywhere could bring joy to those stuck inside on their birthdays. What a fun way to connect with people and a fun piece for students to learn right now! Since it\u2019s a melody everyone knows, it also makes it easier to teach virtually!<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1646834949\" class=\"col medium-4 small-12 large-4\" Rowe<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I love this short piece by Hasselmans because it is always a student favorite. The melody is very laid-back, yet peppy at the same. It is a great piece to work on dynamics and left hand cross-overs.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/joyce-rice\/petty-larcenies-volume-1\/\">Petty Larcenies, vol. 1<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Joyce Rice<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The thing I love most about this collection is that there are great fingerings already put in for every piece! Fingering can make teaching virtually so much harder\u2014but not with these! The pieces are also really fun\u2014and mimic classic melodies\u2014like &#8220;The Star-Spangled Banner,&#8221; &#8220;Fur Elise,&#8221; &#8220;Greensleeves,&#8221; etc. I love &#8220;The Spider Ballet&#8221; at the end of the book\u2014it is a great piece for beginners learning harmonics.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/louise-trotter\/grand-1894-opera-house-waltz\/\">Grand 1894 Opera House Waltz<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Louise Trotter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Waltzes are always fun to play! Plus, this one has two glissandos\u2014my students are always so excited about playing glissandos! This sweet little melody comes in lever harp solo, lap harp solo, plus parts for a second harp or flute accompaniment.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/joy-slavens\/dancing-clouds\/\">Dancing Clouds<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Joy Slavens<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another fun solo with lots of glissandos at the beginning and ending! I love that the fingering is well marked for the student, so you really won\u2019t need your student to make any of their own markings. As Joy states, \u201cit\u2019s a happy, joyful, little tune!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/harpcolumn.com\/music\/all-music\/artists\/eira-lynn-jones\/pick-and-mix-1-warm-up-exercises-for-all-harpists\/\">Pick and Mix 1\u2014Warm Exercises for All Harpists<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><em>by Eira Lynn Jones<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, if your students aren\u2019t already working on exercises, or it\u2019s become secondary with the everyday craziness of life, this is a great time to work them back into your student\u2019s routine! These exercises are all short (one line)\u2014which means students can (hopefully) \u201cpass\u201d each one quickly.
