Laura Zaerr offers this ensemble version of her original work, “River Right Rhumba,” arranged here for three pedal or lever harps. Zaerr writes: “This rhythmic study was inspired by a kayaking trip on the North Umpqua River in Southern Oregon…The three repeating rhythmic patterns come directly from a West African drumming pattern from Guinea, the African Rhumba.” See below for further notes from the composer.

Composer’s Notes

This trio arrangement has both lever moves and pedal moves indicated, so it can be easily accessible to both styles of harps. Harps 1 and 2 are advanced-beginner level, and Harp 3 is beginner level. The parts intertwine to minimize pedal and lever moves, maintaining the rhythmic fluency of the piece. Techniques include harmonics, xylophone sounds, tapping on the sound board, and pres de la table.
