Notes from the arranger:
Peer Gynt Suites op. 46 and op. 55 are among the most popular compositions by Grieg. The four-movement suite op. 55 culminates in the meditative song of Solvejg, in which she relates her impatient yearning for Peer Gynt. Between the minor-key slow verses, an inset Nordic dance continues the melancholy, meditative mood, despite its seemingly light dotted rhythm. As if anticipating the great success this song would achieve, Grieg published the composition in a variety of instrumental and vocal versions.
