Georg Friedrich Handel (23 February 1685, Halle, Germany – 14 April 1759, London, UK) and his compatriot Johann Sebastian Bach are the most celebrated composers of the Baroque period. While not true for Bach, Handel achieved great business success during his lifetime, especially in his later adopted home of England. Handel’s oeuvre and legacy of compositions are truly enormous, including 42 operas and 25 oratorios alone. Many of these compositions are almost forgotten now; however, some continue to enjoy great popularity, including the “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” from the “Salomon” oratorio. Its lively semiquaver passages are still very often heard today as accompaniment for a ceremonial entry.
