Notes from the arranger
Eventually to become one of the most popular hymns of all times, the poem “What A Friend We Have in Jesus” was written by Joseph Scriven in 1855. He sent it from Canada to his Mother in Ireland. In 1868 Charles Converse, an American attorney and composer of hymns, came across Scriven’s poem and set the words to music, publishing it in a hymnal.
