The premier of Charles Gounod’s new five act Opera, Romeo et Juliette, was in Paris on April 27, 1867. It was an immediate success. In the first act, Juliette’s Nanny encourages her to marry the man her Father has chosen for her. Juliette responds with this famous arietta – singing of her hopes and dreams for her life and of the love she hopes to find. Romeo overhears her singing and falls in love with her.
The original French title is “Ah! Je Veux Vivre.” Another English title to this arietta is “Daydreams.”
