Notes from the arranger
This beloved carol first surfaced in the sixteenth century. During the 1700’s, not only did both Mozart and Haydn use the melody within their music, but Welsh harpist John Parry included the air in a musical manuscript he wrote. In 1794 this New Year’s Eve carol (Nos Galan) was published with words. In 1862 harpist John Thomas included this carol with both Welsh and English words within a set of four volumes of Welsh melodies he published.
