Notes from the arranger
Having spent so much of my life in an opera orchestra, I have acquired a real fondness for the operatic repertoire. This book is an opportunity to share with you some of the most famous tunes from the world of opera: tunes that you have always wanted to play but had not found suitable arrangements.
Compared to playing the harp parts in an orchestra, playing from this book may be more enjoyable since this is a chance for you to play the tune on the harp rather than hearing it on the stage. However, there lies the challenge of this book—providing a clear melody and a supportive subtle accompaniment. Fingering, pedaling and phrasing are provided for easy reading. For the “Pearl Fishers’ Duet” I have added a flute part to play the solo line, leaving the harp part intact.
Similar to Volume 1 of Famous Music for the Harp (Traditional Tunes) these arrangements could easily be used as a source of background music for a variety of occasions. Let these tunes delight harpists and audiences alike—it could be the beginning of a newly acquired taste for opera!
