Sanctus is one of seven songs from Faure’s Requiem. Originally scored for choir, strings and harp, this ensemble arrangement gives harpist access to one of Classical Music’s beloved pieces.
With the original harp part kept in harp I, it provides harpist exposure and practice of it before they encounter it on a gig. The melody is split between harp 2 and harp 3 highlighting both the beauty of the piece and the strengths of the harp.
A Requiem is a song to celebrate the life of someone who has died, traditionally a Roman Catholic mass for the dead. In its original form it is for choir and harp. The Latin word “Sanctus” means “Holy”. The traditional text for Sanctus is:
“Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, (Holy, Holy, Holy),
Dominus Deus Sabaoth. (Lord God of Hosts).
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. (Full are heaven and earth of glory thy).
Hosanna in excelsis. (Hosanna in highest).
Faure was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation (late Romantic Period and Impressionistic) and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. One of his composing signatures is using dense and rich harmonies with prolonged resolution.
