Note from the composer
Inspired by the scent and movement of fresh air blowing in from the ocean, the opening melody of “Sea breezes” constantly evolves via successive variations, heard in the context of counterpoint, modulations and changes of character. “Footprints in the sand: Homage to Debussy” is a meditation on the opening motif of Debussy’s prelude Des pas sur la neige, replete with ostinati and cross-rhythmic patterns. The final movement, “Ocean floor,” is a brief depiction of a deep aquatic environment, musically imagining the scurrying of sea creatures across a dimly-lit sea bed.
Three Pieces for Harp was commissioned by Australian harpist, Jacinta Dennett, and performed as part of her Threaded Stars tour. Jacinta Dennett collaborated with Australian cinematographer Jarrod Boord to create an inspiring film of the work (audio recording by Haigelbagel Productions).
