Dutch Harp Festival and Competition
May 12, 2018, 3:00 pm - May 13, 2018, 7:00 pm
The Dutch Harp Festival will return for its fifth edition this year, on May 12th and 13th, hosted within the iconic TivoliVredenburg concert venue in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In celebration of our incredible instrument – in all its shapes, colors, sizes, and genres – world-class performers will gather in Utrecht for a weekend packed with over 35 concerts. Visitors will have the chance to hear the harp in all different settings: world, jazz, and classical music, folk harp workshops, a harpist’s club night, collaborating with singer-songwriters, accompanying silent film, playing along with dancers, and a children’s harp orchestra. Every way you can imagine the harp (and some you would never have thought of) has a place during this memorable event. The weekend will also feature the grand finale of the renewed World Harp Competition as well as the Open Harp Day, held in collaboration with the National Harp Society of the Netherlands.
The visual power of the harp is the central theme of the upcoming festival. Seeing a harp play from close up is so much more impressive than simply listening to it, and it is precisely this visual impression that will be explored in depth at the Dutch Harp Festival 2018. Light and projection artists will add an extra dimension to the concerts, and we will also discover what happens when you turn out the lights and take away the sense of sight entirely. The festival will create a unique visual world for each concert hall in TivoliVredenburg. Visitors will enter a new world with each performance – a world in which each different facet of the harp will be illuminated. Curiosity will leads us all through a discovery of the interaction between music and the visual arts. Witness how a spotlight on a soloist allows the listener to hear more music, how a spectacular light show can add new elements to the music, and how closing your eyes and taking away all visual input can awaken a much deeper level of concentration for the music.
Featured artists will include Nikolaz Cadoret, Maeve Gilchrist, the Dutch National Ballet, Remy van Kesteren, Asko Schönberg Ensemble, Kraftwerk on harp, Niladri Kumar on sitar, Emmanuel Padilla Holguín, Stockhausen’s Freude, and Esther Swift.
We’re looking forward to welcoming you this May 12th and 13th! You don’t want to miss this fifth edition of the Dutch Harp Festival. Mark the dates in your calendar and visit harpfestival.nl for tickets and more information. See you there!
