The Department of Music functions as one component of the liberal arts institution. With such a mission the department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and provides a wide variety of elective courses to the entire student body. This liberal arts orientation defines the goal of the major program–to allow students to pursue an interest in music within the context of a broadly-based program of study.
The major program in music includes intensive study in theory, history, and performance. As in all liberal arts programs, the emphasis is on broad coverage rather than specialization, although specialization is possible through careful selection of elective courses, independent study projects, and internships. The objectives of the major program in music involve preparing students for graduate study as well as for careers in the performing arts, public school teaching, and many other areas.
