Gustavus Adolphus College

This program is best suited for students who:

"enjoy playing in orchestra and going on tour."

What sets this program apart from others is:

"the positive learning environment."

Students who graduate from this program go on to:

"do all kinds of things! Gustavus harp students have a wide variety of interests and majors."

The three words that best describe this school's environment are:

"Friendly, Challenging, Supportive"

As a harpist at Gustavus, you will have the opportunity to grow technically, musically and personally through the study of your instrument.  We will focus on building the strong, relaxed technique required to play the harp effectively (facility, clarity, strength, control, endurance) as well as intensity of listening required to play the harp beautifully (phrasing, dynamics, tone, momentum, character.) Through all of the pieces you study, we will work toward a more comprehensive understanding of music as a language – exploring rhythm, pitch, melody harmony, and form.  Gustavus harp students are encouraged to explore arranging music themselves, with plenty of guidance as needed.
